Badai matahari adalah sebuah gejala alam yang kerap terjadi di pusat tata suraya. Peristiwa tersebutsering ditemui di Galaksi Bimasakti. Badai ini bermula ketika matahari mengeluarkan sebuah gelombang elektromaknetik ke luar orbit yang menyerupai ledakan (solar flare). Ledakan-ledakan ini mampu untuk menembus atmosfer bumi.

Peristiwa badai matahari telah terjadi berkali-kali dalam sejarah. NASA mencatat setidaknya ada enam peristiwa terburuk badai matahari dalam sejarah. Berikut diantaranya yang dikutip SidomiNews dariSpace.

Peristiwa Carrington (1859)

Peristiwa Carrington terjadi pada tahun 1859. Peristiwa ini adalah peristiwa pertama yang mendokumentasikan badai matahari yang berdampak pada bumi. Peristiwa Carrington terjadi pada pukul 11:18 pada 1 September 1859. Nama Peristiwa Carrington didedikasikan untuk Richard Carrington, astronom matahari yang menyaksikan peristiwa tersebut melalui teleskop observatorium pribadinya.

Solar Flare (1972)

Suar surya besar terjadi pada 4 Agustus 1972. Akibat dari solar flare ini terputusnya komunikasi jarak jauh telepon di beberapa negara bagian Amerika Serikat (AS). Termasuk Illinois.

Kegagalan Pembangkit Listrik akibat Solar Flare (1989)

Pada bulan Maret 1989, suar surya kuat memicu pemadaman listrik di Kanada yang membuat enam juta orang hidup dikegelapan. Pemadaman ini terjadi pada 13 Maret 1989. Akibatnya, listrik sempat mati hingga sembilan jam. Menurut NASA, transmisi tenaga listrik dari stasiun Hydro Quebec terganggu dan menular hingga transformator daya di New Jersey. Solar flare ini berbeda skalanya dengan Peristiwa Carrington pada 1859.

Peristiwa Hari Bastille (2000)

Peristiwa Hari Bastille mengambil nama dari hari libur nasional Kemerdekaan Prancis pada tanggal 14 Juli 2000. Ini adalah letusan suar surya yang mengeluarkan skala X5 pada tiap jilatan api matahari. Peristiwa Hari Bastille menyebabkan beberapa satelit memutuskan sirkuit radio mereka dan menyebabkan radio padam. Peristiwa ini adalah suar surya yang paling kuat sejak tahun 1989.

Badai Matahari Halloween (2003)

Pada 28 Oktober 2003, matahari melepaskan sesuatu yang sangat besar akibatsolar flare. Badai Matahari sangat intens dan begitu kuat sehingga sensor pesawat ruang angkasa kewalahan untuk mengukurnya. Badai matahari merupakan merupakan bagian dari serangkaian sembilan flare terbesar selama periode dua minggu.

X-Ray Sun Flare for Xmas (2006)

Ketika badai matahari pada 5 Desember 2006, tercatat radiasi kuat X9 pada skala cuaca ruang angkasa. Akibat badai matahari ini satelit komunikasi danGlobal Position System (GPS) sempat terganggu selama sekitar 10 menit. Badai Matahari tersebut sangat begitu kuat dan merusak instrumen sinar-X pada satelit GOES 13 yang memotretnya.
